What Did You Learn Today?

This week I attended the Welcome Conference in New York City. It’s a one-day, single-stage conference put on by Will Guidara, author of Unreasonable Hospitality. Originally created for the hospitality industry, it has expanded its reach to people from all industries looking to learn and grow from a diverse group of speakers.

I love going to events like this because I love learning. It’s one of the things that fuels me. I love gaining knowledge about a new subject, being presented with a different perspective, or simply being reminded of something I needed to hear at that moment.

Often as speakers share stories and I absorb the content, I find myself reflecting on how I want to apply that information to my life.  And on Monday, I thought about how we should be approaching AI, what it takes to truly bring out creativity in people, the importance of seeing the world through different perspectives, and why we shouldn't be afraid to chase failure.

Welcome Conference | New York City | October 5, 2026

I think one of the most powerful things we can do is start each day with the expectation that there is something for us to learn. When we do, we're much more likely to notice the lessons happening all around us.

Each night at our dinner table, we share the things we're grateful for and then take turns answering another question: What did you learn today?  It's an opportunity to reflect on what happened during the day. And knowing the question is coming makes me more aware of what I'm learning along the way.

I believe one of the most important commitments we can make as leaders is to remain lifelong learners. The world keeps changing. Our businesses change. Our teams change. And hopefully, we continue to change too.

Focused learning can happen at a conference in New York City or events like the MIBE Summit, and it can also happen in a conversation with a coworker or other daily interactions. It can come from a book or podcast, from asking someone a better question, trying something we've never done before, or paying attention when something doesn't go the way we expected.

I've learned a lot this week and I’m excited to put it into practice.  The more I learn though, the more aware I become of how much I still don't know.  Maybe that's why I love our dinner table question so much. It reminds me that every day gives us an opportunity to learn something if we're paying attention.

So, what did you learn today?

Anthony Lambatos

The Coach — This guy is easily the best-dressed due at the office. Anthony is also the only gentleman who wears a suit in the office, so it comes as no surprise. In addition to dressing well, he’s a master of organizational management. And Excel spreadsheets. If there’s anyone who can get you excited about pivot tables, it’s him! Although he studied business and marketing at the University of Oregon, Anthony received his Ph.D. in running a company at the School of Hard Knocks. As early as he can remember, Anthony was involved in the family business. And now, after years of experience in the good, the bad, and the ugly, he knows how to handle any situation. His leadership, patience, and desire to make those around him better is why we call him The Coach.
