The Hidden Layers of Culture
Butterflies are well known for their metamorphic change — transforming from crawling caterpillars into creatures of flight. But did you know their wings are actually translucent?
I recently learned this fun fact, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it - (especially since a butterfly recently landed on my hand and stayed long enough for me to snap a picture!)
From a distance, we see bold colors and beautiful patterns. But up close, butterfly wings are made of delicate, translucent material, covered in thousands of microscopic scales that reflect light in different ways — creating the vibrant appearance we admire.
In many ways, I think culture works the same way.
What looks strong and cohesive from the outside — shared values, team energy, traditions — is built on something much more fragile underneath.

These elements may not always be visible, but they reflect everything.
At Footers, people often assume we’ve always had great culture. But the truth? It started out messy. Like a lot of things worth building, it took time. We were the “ugly caterpillar” — learning, evolving, growing wings.
It took years of intentionality to create what we have today — and we still work at it every single day.
The "butterfly effect" — a term coined by Edward Lorenz — suggests that even the smallest shifts in a complex system can lead to huge change over time.
When it comes to culture, that couldn't be more true.
It can feel overwhelming to make improvements, especially if you're not sure where to start. But we should never underestimate the power of small, consistent steps.
Tiny actions — a thoughtful conversation, clear expectations, recognition, accountability — build momentum. They shape the environment. And over time, they turn into something magical.
And just like a butterfly’s wing can be damaged by careless hands, a culture can be disrupted by small missteps in leadership, communication, or follow-through.
But when cared for?
It lifts people.
It inspires movement.
It creates moments of awe.
