3 Reasons Most Team Events Don’t Work

This week, we hosted our annual summer team event at Footers Catering. For the second year in a row, we organized a “not your average” kickball game.

With added twists like puzzles, an eating challenge, trivia, carrying a wet sponge around the bases, face painting, and custom jerseys, our team hit the field for some friendly (and hilarious) competition. The result? Lots of laughs, big smiles, and a much-needed break in the middle of our busy summer season.

I’m often asked how to create a truly great team event. And while there’s no perfect formula, I’ve noticed three common mistakes companies make when events fall flat:

1. They Aren’t Unique

Many organizers try too hard to please everyone, which waters down the experience. While inclusivity matters, don’t be afraid to push your team a little outside their comfort zones. The most memorable events come from novelty and shared adventure — not from playing it safe.

2. There’s No Buy-In

Too often, events are planned by a small group without involvement from across the organization. Without internal advocates, it’s tough to get people to show up. The key? Recruit trusted influencers and leaders from every department to generate buzz, build excitement, and drive participation.

3. They Miss the Moment for Purpose + Connection

Companies focus on the logistics — food, drinks, timing — but overlook two of the biggest drivers of engagement: purpose and connection. Great events remind people why their work matters and help them build stronger relationships. Share stories, mix departments, celebrate wins — and watch your team culture deepen.

Team events aren’t just about fun — they’re about reinforcing culture, building trust, and recharging energy. When done well, they become milestones that people talk about long after the last game or meal.

So next time you're planning a team event, don’t just check the box — design something intentional, inclusive, and meaningful. That’s where the real magic happens.

The Coach — This guy is easily the best-dressed due at the office. Anthony is also the only gentleman who wears a suit in the office, so it comes as no surprise. In addition to dressing well, he’s a master of organizational management. And Excel spreadsheets. If there’s anyone who can get you excited about pivot tables, it’s him! Although he studied business and marketing at the University of Oregon, Anthony received his Ph.D. in running a company at the School of Hard Knocks. As early as he can remember, Anthony was involved in the family business. And now, after years of experience in the good, the bad, and the ugly, he knows how to handle any situation. His leadership, patience, and desire to make those around him better is why we call him The Coach.
