SELF-AWARENESS
“Our connection with others will never be greater than the connection we have with ourselves.”
— Brené Brown
FACILITATOR PROMPT:
Dr. Tasha Eurich has been studying Self-Awareness for over a decade. Through her research, she has discovered that self-awareness is an essential skill for senior leaders to have while leading a team. She found that “when see ourselves clearly, we are more confident and more creative. We make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships, and communicate more effectively.” She has categorized her findings into two modes of insight: external self-awareness, and internal self-awareness.
Internal self-awareness means understanding your inner values, passions, aspirations, ideal environment, patterns, reactions and impact on others.
External self-awareness means understanding how other people view you.
Dr. Eurich found that people who improved their external self-awareness did so by seeking out feedback from “loving” critics (people who have their best interests in mind and are willing to tell them the truth.) Before this month’s meeting with your team, each person will need to take a 5-minute self-awareness test (The Insight Quiz). They will also need to ask someone else on your team who they are close with to fill out the assessment. It is all explained on Tasha’s website. Have each person bring their report to the meeting.
NOTE: It may also be helpful for you to watch this TED Talk with Tasha to help provide some context to this month’s lesson.
