Fun

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

TEAM RELAY

INCLUDED SUPPLIES:

  • Marshmallows

  • Straws

  • Oreos

YOU’LL NEED TO GRAB:

  • Plastic Spoon

  • Plastic Fork

  • Solo Cups

  • Empty Bottles of Water

ROOM SETUP

Place 15 marshmallows in a cup on one side of the room. Place two straws, a plastic spoon and a plastic fork next to the cup. Depending on how many teams you have, you will need to replicate this for each team (4-5 people). On the other side of the room, place an empty bottle of water for each team on a table.

INSTRUCTIONS:

This month we encourage you to have some fun with your team through this relay!  For this activity, divide your group into teams of 4-5 people.

Challenge One

  • Start by giving every team five minutes to come up with a Culture in Action idea using the worksheet below.

  • After five minutes, have everyone move to the station with marshmallows and straws.

Challenge Two

  • When you say “go” teams will have to transfer 10 marshmallows across the room and into the empty water bottles at the table across from them.

  • They are not allowed to touch the marshmallows with their hands or any other part of their body and they must keep one hand behind their back at all times.

  • If any marshmallows are dropped or don’t make it into the water bottle, they must be taken back to the starting cup.

  • If the water bottle is knocked over, all team members must return to the starting cup.

Challenge Three

  • Once a team has transferred 10 marshmallows, hand them the Wedding Logic Puzzle to solve.

  • When they think they have the answer, they can call “check” and you can review their answers to let them know if they are correct.

  • If they have some incorrect answers, do not tell them which ones are wrong, simply say that’s not correct.

  • Once a team has completed the logic puzzle, they can move to the Oreos.

Challenge Four

  • Between their team, they must get three Oreos from their forehead into their mouth without using their hands!

  • Only one person can participate at a time, and a team member who was successful can go again if necessary.

  • The first team to complete the Oreo challenge is your winner.

  • Feel free to award a prize or simply say that today we were playing for pride not prize!

DEBRIEF:

Use the following prompts/questions with your group to close out your meeting:

  • Have each team present their Culture in Action idea to the team.  In five minutes, hopefully your team was able to come up with ideas that could be implemented.  Decide which one should be flushed out in a little more detail and implemented within your company.

Lesson: Sometimes we overcomplicate culture initiatives.

  • What was your original strategy with the marshmallows?  How did you adapt or shift that strategy?

Lesson: Sometimes our original plan, doesn’t work and we need to adjust.

  • How did you collaborate or work together to solve the logic puzzle?  What above and beyond behaviors has your team demonstrated for clients?

Lesson: Sometimes complex problems require teamwork AND don’t forget to shine a light on the awesome things your team members do to go above and beyond for your clients.

  • What did you hear or notice when people were doing the Oreo challenge?  Most likely there was laughing, smiling, encouraging fellow team members.

Lesson: Don’t forget to infuse fun into your work routine.  It lightens the mood, brings people together and creates memorable moments.
