Shining Bright

Did you see the Full Moon this week?  I was leaving work on Monday and it illuminated my drive home as it was starting to climb higher into the sky.  It was a clear night and the fact that it was a supermoon (a full moon that occurs when the moon’s orbit is closest to the earth) made it even brighter and more majestic than a normal full moon. The first full moon of the year is called the wolf moon because of the idea that during January’s long, cold and dark nights the howls of wolves are more likely to be heard.  There is something special about looking up into the night sky and gazing at the moon and stars.  For me it evokes a sense of wonder, but also peace.  Astrology can be influential in helping us understand more about ourselves and the world we live in when we dive deep into the position of each planet at the time of our birth.  On a surface level though, we can take inspiration on our leadership journey from the symbolism of a full moon.

Illumination and Clarity

Just as the full moon lights up the night sky, leaders are expected to bring clarity and direction to their organizations.  Especially in times of uncertainty, the brightness of the moon can represent our ability to guide others though challenges.  Shining a light on where you want to go and why also helps gain trust and buy in from your team.

Cycles

The moon goes through phases, culminating in the full moon.  Leadership is a process that requires patience through a variety of phases.  As leaders we dive into each month, navigating the ups and the downs.  We set goals or objectives, move toward them, overcome obstacles, and work toward completion.  The end of these cycles should be marked by something that allows us to reflect on what we’ve accomplished and celebrate our wins.

Emotional Influence

Full moons occur when the moon is directly opposite the sun which can create a sense of balance and harmony.  However it can also be a time of heightened emotions which can lead to friction, and polarity.  Leaders must understand their ability to influence others and respond to the specific emotional needs of their team members.  These are ever-changing and when leaders are in tune with their emotions, passions, and aspirations, they can connect with others on a deeper level.

Transformation

The phases of the moon are a reflection of constant change and growth.  Leaders must be mindful of their ability to evolve, adapt, and embrace new phases in their journey.  When we commit to learning new things and to opening our mind to new possibilities we grow our ability to lead others and make a positive difference in their lives.

The next full moon comes up on February 12th.  As the moon goes through its next 29.5 day cycle and you get settled into 2025, I encourage you to peak into what that time frame looks like for you.  How will you illuminate the way, navigate the ups and downs, be more emotionally aware, and be mindful of transformational opportunities?  And if you lean into the phase you are in on your leadership journey you just might find yourself shining bright.

Anthony Lambatos

The Coach — This guy is easily the best-dressed due at the office. Anthony is also the only gentleman who wears a suit in the office, so it comes as no surprise. In addition to dressing well, he’s a master of organizational management. And Excel spreadsheets. If there’s anyone who can get you excited about pivot tables, it’s him! Although he studied business and marketing at the University of Oregon, Anthony received his Ph.D. in running a company at the School of Hard Knocks. As early as he can remember, Anthony was involved in the family business. And now, after years of experience in the good, the bad, and the ugly, he knows how to handle any situation. His leadership, patience, and desire to make those around him better is why we call him The Coach.
