Four Traits that Separate Game-Changing Hires from the Rest
In uncertain times, most businesses take a conservative approach — and understandably so. But periods of uncertainty can also present unique opportunities. Costs of expansion come down, new demands emerge, and there are often talented people actively looking for work.
In fact, unemployment in the hospitality industry recently hit its highest level since just after the pandemic. That’s challenging for some — but for those looking to grow or level up their team, it’s a window of opportunity.
While it's easier now to attract a larger pool of candidates, having a structured, intentional hiring process is more important than ever. You need clarity on the position and a way to spot top talent — especially when the stakes are high.
Anthony sharing the importance of quality hires
Here are four traits I consistently look for when hiring key team members:
1. Perseverance
Top performers don’t fold under pressure. They bounce back from failure, embrace challenges, and find creative solutions when things go wrong. They’re the people who keep pushing when others slow down.
Interview Tip: Ask, “Tell us about a time you wanted something so badly that you were unstoppable. What did you overcome to get there?”
2. Teamwork
Everyone says they’re a team player — but real collaboration shows up in how people operate within actual teams. Understanding their past dynamics reveals how they’ll fit with yours.
Interview Tip: Ask, “Tell me about a time you worked on a team that struggled. What was your role? How would your teammates describe your contribution?”
3. Initiative
Great hires don’t wait to be told what to do. Once they understand the goal, they move — often beyond their job description. They’re constantly looking for ways to improve themselves, their team, and the organization.
Interview Tip: Ask, “Can you share examples where you took initiative that made a real impact?”
4. Positivity
Positive people lift everyone around them. It’s not about ignoring reality — it’s about choosing a mindset that fuels solutions instead of getting stuck in problems. They’re the ones who help keep momentum going when things feel tough.
Interview Tip: Ask, “What bothers you? Are you lucky?” (A fun way to explore mindset — and one that reveals a lot.)
Next time you’re hiring, don’t just look at experience or technical fit. Look for these four traits: perseverance, teamwork, initiative, and positivity. These are the game-changers — the people who won’t just do the job, but help elevate everyone around them.
I'd love to hear from you. Outside of skill sets that pertain to a specific job, what traits do you look for when hiring?
