Heart Over Head
Heart Leadership is at the foundation of what we believe it takes to create a great place to work. We are not alone in this thought that leading with our hearts can be a more powerful and impactful way to lead than leading with our heads. I had the honor of meeting two very special people last night, Stephen and Mara Klemich, at a dinner celebrating their book launch. “Klem and Mara” have spent many years doing research and working with leaders from some of the largest companies in the world, teaching them what it means to live and lead with their hearts. Their book, Above The Line, talks about how most people and organizations live “below the line”, leading with fear and pride, while heart leaders live “above the line” leading with humility and love. Leading with fear and pride results in self promoting and self protecting, where leading with humility and love results in personal growth and growing others.
“In reality, it’s helping someone else that can bring us the greatest joy in life”
During the dinner Mara talked about what an honor it is to be able to help others. At it’s core, heart leadership is about serving and helping others. Too often though, I think people view helping someone as extra work that adds to how busy they are or a burden that distracts from all the work they have to do. In reality, it’s helping someone else that can bring us the greatest joy in life. My message to the team this morning was to look for ways this week to help or serve someone else. Whether it is a co-worker, family member or friend we can take time to appreciate that we had a positive impact on their life. And it doesn’t have to be something monumental, it could just be a kind gesture or a helping hand that creates a smile and ultimately makes the world a better place. Klem ended the dinner by saying that, “Love is stronger than fear” and I couldn’t agree more!
